10 Pros and Cons of Using Google Docs' Free Resume Templates

Stock Google Docs Resume Templates Pros and Cons

Does google docs have resume templates? Of course! But should you use them to apply for jobs?

Google Docs offers five basic resume templates, and like any google doc template, you can edit the content and the layout as much as you like. But, before you start using one of their stock resumes, there are a few things you should know. Here is a short list of pros and cons for you to consider:

PROS of the Free Resume Templates Offered by Google Docs

  1. They’re FREE - Really? Let’s see. With a free Google account, you get free access to Google Docs and their free resume templates. So yeah, they're free.

  2. They’re easy to edit - Google Docs resume templates are just as easy, if not easier, to edit than a Microsoft Word resume template, IMHO.

  3. No software to install - Google Docs operates within your web browser, which means that it’s compatible with all computers. I think it’s pretty convenient that you don’t have to install anything on your computer.

  4. They come with hundreds of free Google Fonts - This is a huge plus, especially because changing the fonts is one of the easiest ways to customize your resume to look more personal and unique.

  5. They are easy to print and export as PDFs - Once you’re done, all you have to do is go to File>Print to print it or to File>Download As to export it as a PDF. Having your resume in non-editable PDF format is very handy since you’ll likely be applying for jobs online.

CONS of the Free Resume Templates Offered by Google Docs

  1. Unimpressive - The overall design of the stock Google Docs resume templates are ok, but they’re by no means impressive. If you want to look more professional, consider buying a premium google docs resume template. A premium Google Docs resume template will help you stand out, make a better impression, and appear more professional.

  2. Small Selection - Google Docs currently offers five resume templates and they’re all somewhat similar. There a hundreds of premium resume templates out there varying in style, layout, colors, etc.

  3. Overused - Since they are free, you run the risk of looking like many other candidates who have applied for the same jobs at the same companies as you… and you may not necessarily want to be associated to other candidates in this way.

  4. Basic Layout - If you want to include any more than your education and a couple years of experience in your resume  most of the basic Google Docs resume layouts aren’t ideal for you. They don’t utilize the space on the page as efficiently as as many professionally designed resume templates.

  5. No matching references sheet or cover letter - Everything you deliver to recruiters is used to determine the quality of candidate you are. A professional resume with a matching cover letter and reference sheet elevates the quality of your brand and conveys greater professionalism.

So, yes, Google Docs does have resume templates. They are great! They are basic, but you can customize them to your heart's content. If you are looking to convey greater professionalism or need to fit more content into your resume while keeping it classy and easy to read, then look beyond the stock resume templates offered by Google Docs and look for premium Google Docs resume templates.
